Dental Assistant/Dental Hygienist Questions!?

Jesse Japak: Dental Hygiene jobs do pay well, however, it can be really hard to find a job. Starting pay is around $25/hour in Georgia. After graduation and passing your clinical exam and written exams (exams cost about $2000 to take), you usually have to take temporary positions (filling in for a hygienist that will be out). Most of the girls I went to school with (graduated 2009) are working part time positions 1 or 2 days a week and do temp work when they can to fill out their week. Many hygienists work at several offices so they don't receive any benefits. A few have found full time work. Many full time positions also don't offer benefits. It can be very hard work. Many dentists are money hungry and want you to get patients in and out and be a salesperson. However, it can be a very rewarding career. Helping patients can be a rewarding experience and there are good dentists to work for. Several students in my class had already received a Bachelor degree in another subj! ect. You definitely will not be over qualified. You will find that hygiene school is really hard. There are many more assistant jobs where I live compared the hygiene jobs. However, assistants don't make nearly as much and don't require as much schooling. However, most assistants will have full time work compared to working temp positions and at more than one office. I didn't do assisting before hygiene, so I am not sure about the pros and cons of being an assistant....Show more
